The Gate Guardian’s Daughter
The Gate Trilogy Prequel
by K.T. Munson
Genre: YA Dark Fantasy
29 Pages
The interplanetary gates require guardians and the reformed demon
Malthael is one of them.

His adoptive daughter, Elisabeth, is special, but her dangerous ability
hasn’t awoken yet. Malthael knows it will one day and from then on
her life will forever be altered. Malthael isolates her from outside
world as much to protect everyone else as to safeguard her. It is all
he can do to delay the inevitable.
Now that Elisabeth is ten, how long can Malthael keep her confined?
x
x

From her perch in the lush green tree, Elisabeth looked over the outer stone wall that surrounded her family’s property. The sounds of children yelling in the street as they played with a small leather ball filled her ears. She loved to watch all the activity and pretend she was with them. As she hid from the heat of the summer sun in her favorite place in her new home, she swung her legs back and forth, the tip of her toe scraping against the top of the barrier. At the base of the tree, a Netherhound named Duke slept soundly. She peered down and smiled at his sweet, fox-like face. His twin, Nathan, was somewhere else on the sprawling property.

The great house sat back from the road—far too much space for four people and two dogs as far as Elisabeth was concerned. Her papa, Malthael, was the Gate Guardian for Ashlad, a position that Elisabeth understood was very important and had been the reason they’d had to leave their home in the south. But that didn’t mean she had to like it. It wasn’t as though she’d had any friends there either, but at least she’d liked their secluded house on the seaside. Just thinking of Asilla made her miss that peaceful beach home.

She didn’t have any friends and didn’t try to play with the children she was observing because she was a very dangerous young girl — or at least that is what Malthael told her. It wasn’t as though she’d ever hurt anyone. But Malthael insisted that she could and should, therefore, be kept away from people until she was older. Elisabeth didn’t like it, but she loved her papa and didn’t want to make him angry.

“Elisabeth!” her tutor, Milo, called.

Sighing, she leaned forward as he strode across the grounds, searching for her. Milo’s black hair had been smoothed back multiple times in irritation, no doubt at her tardiness. Duke sat up, his ears primed forward as he listened to Milo beckoning for her to return. Lifting her legs up into the safety of the trees boughs, she decided she wasn’t ready to return to her studies. Duke’s deadly triple bladed tail shifted away from his boar-shaped body. Elisabeth eyed the nick in his ram-like horns and wondered for the hundredth time how it had happened.

“Elisabeth!” Milo yelled louder, catching the attention of the children beyond the wall.

Duke vanished. She wondered where he went when he disappeared like that—to another dimension or even the Netherworld? The children scattered, screeching about a monster in the mansion.

Elisabeth giggled because they were so wrong. There were three demons living in the mansion and two Netherhounds, but no monsters!

“Hello?” a voice called out from the other side of the wall.

Elisabeth froze. She heard grunting, and an instant later, a head popped over the top. A young boy with filthy brown hair smiled at her. One of his front teeth was missing. Elisabeth stared, her mouth ajar; she’d never talked to someone her own age without Malthael or Milo present. Elisabeth hesitantly smiled back.

“Hi,” Elisabeth managed, despite the lump in her throat.

This is against Malthael’s rules, she thought. Another part of her mind whispered, But only if he finds out.

Curl up in front of the fire, with this fun, festive read.

Daisy Jones has hit rock bottom. Or so she believes.

To top it all off, Christmas, is just around the corner!

About the Author

Lilac spends all her time writing, or reading, or thinking about writing or reading, often to the detriment of her day job, her family, and the housework. She apologises to her employer and her loved ones, but the house will simply have to deal with it!

She calls Worcester home, though she would prefer to call somewhere hot and sunny home, somewhere with a beach and cocktails and endless opportunities for snoozing in the sun…

When she isn’t hunched over a computer or dreaming about foreign shores, she enjoys creating strange, inedible dishes in the kitchen, accusing her daughter of stealing (she meant to say “borrowing”) her clothes, and fighting with her husband over whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher.

New Release: Punk Story by Neil Rowland

1977, Silver Jubilee year and the punk movement is breaking out among British youth, spreading moral panic. Paul Bottle and friends are just leaving college, when he is seduced by the vibrant punk scene and suddenly his life begins. Next door neighbour Stan forms his own band, Mortal Wound and gigs and new music explode around them.  When EMI offer a record contract to the best local punk group, furious competition breaks out among all the rivals. A ruthless ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest ensues that summer.

If you were an original punk – or a younger person interested – this book puts you right back there among it. In a gripping, often hilarious, sometimes touching story, the music, the whole period and – most importantly – the brilliant people – are brought back to us. We feel the social pain and desire that fuelled the whole phenomenon, generally amid times of economic hardship and political conflict. Most of all we feel the energy and excitement and hilarity.

 Excerpt

“This is a story about friendship, a punk band and the thrill ride of music.
Music and style, arts and rebellion, identity and growing up, that’s where it began.  Shock waves proved something seismic was about to happen in the UK. Until punk came along school friends would drag me into town to bad clubs with terrible soundtracks.  I’d put on my check sports jacket and flared trousers.  Local girls in home-sewn hot pants would either ignore me or give a jump of alarm. They left me under a plastic palm tree at the edge of the floor, incinerated with embarrassment.”

About the Author

Neil’s trademark style is a mix of humour, suspense and intelligence. The novels entertain, fire the brain cells, bring frequent smiles and certainly keep the pages turning and turning. This writing avoids formulas and cliches like dull Sunday afternoons. Pleasure guaranteed. Discover something new and exciting, often exhilarating and cutting edge.
Neil Rowland began his writing career as a teenage music critic for Melody Maker, Blitz and other publications. This put him into eye-contact with a trained to kill Doberman Pinscher at a rock’s star’s pine shaded Jacksonville home: among other ‘adventures’.

Punk Story by Neil Rowland is available from Amazon UK in paperback and e-book. It is also available from Amazon US.

New Release: Invisible Scars by Peter Sykes

Whilst Paul and Kate work alongside each other as doctor and nurse on the surgical ward, strains in their relationship emerge. And when Kate’s baby dies and Paul’s inexperience costs lives, doubt and despair hang in the air and their marriage appears to be doomed.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Paul saves the life of a critically ill patient and Kate is finally able to bid an emotional farewell to the child she has lost.

Will their marriage survive the stresses of their hospital work and their past traumas?

Excerpt

Sir William, the surgical consultant, paused a long time before speaking. “Knowing that your husband has had a vasectomy, I wrote to the Inverness Hospital where you were treated and asked for a copy of your notes.  The gynaecologist there was in no doubt about it. He was convinced that you were pregnant. He was equally certain that you then had a miscarriage.”

Again Sir William paused, all the while watching his patient. For the first time there was a flicker of alarm on Mrs Cullen’s face. And as Sir William allowed the pause to drag on, the hint of concern became a look of panic.

Eventually Sir William continued. “However, perhaps unwisely, they did not confirm the diagnosis by sending any tissue to the laboratory. There was no analysis of the contents of the womb.”

“So what does that mean?” Mrs Cullen asked hesitantly, a mouse trapped in a corner, desperately looking for a way to escape.

“It means that they never actually proved that you had a miscarriage. It is just possible that they made a mistake.”

About the Author

Peter Sykes served as a consultant surgeon for 25 years, later becoming the medical director of an NHS Trust, winning a ‘UK Medical Management Team of the Year’ award.  During the final three years of his career, he was involved at a national level in the control of quality of surgical services.

Peter’s first novel The First Cut was published in 2011. It described Paul Lambert’s medical misadventures as he was thrown, bewildered and unprepared, onto a busy surgical ward as a newly qualified doctor.

This was followed in 2013 by Behind the Screens which tells real-life tales at a time when care and compassion ruled supreme in British hospitals. Some of the stories are humorous, some sad, others poignant, but all are very ‘human’. The novel also follows Paul’s chequered love life and unveils some of the ‘high jinks’ that doctors get up to when off-duty.

Peter’s third novel First Do No Harm was published in 2015 and is set against industrial action that beset the NHS in the 1970’s, as the normal healthy camaraderie of the City Hospital is lost and the dispute sets nurse against nurse and doctor against doctor.

‘Invisible Scars’ is available from Amazon UK at in paperback and e-book. It is also available from Amazon US.

Book Blast: Lean in to Relationships by Rishabh Jhol

x

About the Book:

Doubt has pivoted many a relationship across the centuries. Whether it is Othello
suspicious of Desdemona or through the rise of paranoia as a trope in twentieth
century writings. While paranoia naturally suggests the vulnerability of
individual mind to social rhetoric, it is also the space for deep interrogation
of the individual that renders him/her to paranoia. This novel presents that
doubt has the potential to be a space of liberation.
 x
Madeeha works in Jordan to rehabilitate Syrian refugees. Zehen, a political analyst from India, meets her in the US during their social impact program. He is
intrigued and charmed by her, and falls deeply in love. But the world political
climate, with its accompanying cultural narratives about terror and pain, infects
Zehen’s mind. Zehen begins to suspect Madeeha as a possible mujahid. Will he find his truth?
 x
Fear doesn’t devastate; it stirs the inner pot. It is a tender love story that triumphs heartbreaks and sets the foundation of deep lasting future relationships – a delightful emancipation from social intrigues and cultural constraints.

Read an Excerpt:

Zehen was experiencing sweet joy in his heart. Memories bustled in the head.
When did he first see her? Zehen searched his head madly. Orientation session?
Corridor to the classroom? However, he tried, he couldn’t pinpoint the moment.
A whirr of images, of moments, yet-to-be collaged. And a heart that already had
a narrative, waiting to be inset.
We imagine that all romantic stories will have a sigh-worthy romantic beginning.
But beginnings are when the heart awakens, when the soul remembers. A presence
stills and emerges from the shadows of time.
His first memory was when she introduced herself in the class. They had gathered at
Presidium University for a one-year course on Social Impact Leadership. Outside,
the white fringe tree was laden with its grape-like fruits. The pine, oak and
spruce waited for winter to tell the world how unchangeable they were. And the
old Redwood stood proud like the institution itself. Inside, in the warm
classroom, students from various cultures across the world had gathered.
Icebreaker session was on and the usual round of introductions.
Introduction is a ritual. A cumbersome ritual. How does one reduce the tapestry of one’s
entire existence, the colors, and the many weaves into a single palatable
thread?

Anecdote
I published my first book in 2015 and my second book in early 2016. I was single
at the time and using dating apps to meet other single people. I met a girl in
mid-2016 who took fancy to my dating profile, especially that I am an author.
After a couple of meetings, She demanded that I write about her. I jokingly
told her that I am a Phoenix writer, i.e., I fall in love, get dumped, and
write about my failed relationship. She broke-up with me, and still invariably pings
whether I am including ‘her and our relationship’ in my upcoming book(s).
———————-
The genesis of this book came about while I was on a cross-country train ride in
the US. I met Mark who had been a successful marketing professional with considerable
international marketing experience. He had travelled to all of Asia and
understood the regional peculiarities.
He was later diagnosed with lung cancer. By the time, it was detected, it was
stage 3. He was put under radiation and intensive chemotherapy. He went in for
three other opinions. All of them agreed that the cancer was aggressive and
spreading fast. He searched for the latest treatments and sought to enter
clinical trials. The process lasted for two years.
In the meantime, the cancer advanced. The doctors said the cancer was incurable
and he didn’t have long to live. It took him weeks of denial to come around to
the truth – he didn’t have long to live.
He returned home from a long walk one evening and asked himself a crucial
question: “If I am going to die, then I might as well die straight away. What
is point of waiting for death to show up?”
That evening he ate well, watched a movie with his girlfriend, poured himself a rare
scotch and sat in his study. It was time. He wrote out his letter – love and
wishes to his family, loved ones and friends, his last wishes about funeral,
information on his will, and a general note thanking all. He placed it in an
envelope. He planned to kill himself early morning. He finished his scotch,
brushed and went to bed.
In the middle of the night, he woke up to a noise. The light was on in the study and
he could hear sniffles. He walked cautiously up and there in the study, his
girlfriend was holding his suicide letter and crying. He watched her as her
body crumpled and sank into the chair. Her face contorted in agony. In her face, he
saw what was the consequence of his action. The penny dropped.
I paled and listened in horror. Mark continued, “I realized that our life is
never ours. We are nothing but a bundle of emotions for the people who love us
and the people we love. The meaning of life is to optimize for the happiness of
such people. There’s nothing more to living.
That day on, I have been living for maximizing the happiness of my loved ones”
That’s how I stumbled on lean in to relationships; it has become my life philosophy.

A. Nicky Hjort is originally from Arlington, Texas- the second of five
siblings, all of whom have strong creative talents. She currently
lives in coastal central California where she practices medicine as
an Ob/GYN. In between being a lovingly devoted mother and delivering
babies, she writes stories that cross multiple genre lines- from Sci
Fi to high fantasy, but all of her stories have thriller and strong
romantic components. And for her clever reader, all of her
manuscripts are subtly connected to each other, with their purpose to
explore all facets of Love and Light. She likes to say that her
stories write themselves, and in the process, often write her, or at
least the next version of her hoping to emerge. A lover of all the
arts, A. Nicky Hjort hopes her stories might inspire you to find your
inner creative genius.
As for her heroes- they are as varied and eclectic as her choice of
narrative genres, but when pushed to list her favorite influences,
she would say James Patterson, Barbara Kingsolver, Patricia Cornwell,
Dean Koonntz, Gene Roddenberry, Shel Silverstein, Suzanne Collins,
and Walt Disney.
