The Cases of Lieutenant DeLong #1
By Angela Kay
Genre: Suspense, Thriller, Mystery
 x
When three young boys stumble into Lieutenant Jim DeLong’s life one night
during a winter storm, they claim they’ve seen a dead body by the

investigates, DeLong sees no evidence, not even a body. But were the
boys telling the truth?

With the help of his oldest friend and mentor, former Naval investigator
Russ Calhoun, DeLong sets out to find whether Manny Grimes is alive
or dead. The further away he gets to the bottom of the mystery, the
closer he comes to realize that his own life is falling
apart.
Delving deeper into the murder of Manny Grimes, Lieutenant DeLong
begins to unravel, losing his sense of control, falling into old temptations he
spent years to overcome. Will he be able to move past his own demons
and untangle the web of lies before it’s too late?

Chapter 10

“We don’t have the time to go searching for a missing person that hasn’t yet been reported missing.”

Captain Stewart had listened intently to DeLong’s story before shaking his head in annoyance.

“But, sir,” DeLong protested, “the kids reported him at the school and—”

Though he already knew the answer, Stewart asked, “When you investigated, did you see Grimes at the school? Or any evidence that corroborated these children’s claims?”

“No,” DeLong admitted.

“I’m sorry, Lieutenant, but I’m not going to allow you to run around town, searching for a man that more than likely got out of Dodge. I don’t appreciate the fact that a member of my team,” Stewart jabbed a thumb toward his chest, “entered another person’s home without permission. And convinced a civilian to do the same.” The captain glared from DeLong to Calhoun and back again.

“Captain Stewart,” Calhoun put in. He had been seated quietly, listening as the lieutenant recounted once again what had happened the day before. Now he rose to put in his two cents. “I believe that something happened to Grimes. I went to his house on my own accord. Everything Jim just told you, I stand by. Something happened to this man. We have a duty to find out what. Captain, if we come up with nothing, or we find out we’ve been chasing our tails, then I’ll eat my jacket.”

Stewart narrowed his eyes in Calhoun’s direction and crossed his arms. “You think this is funny, Calhoun? I would have thought better of you than to be involved in a wild goose chase. Entering a man’s premises without a warrant? I should throw the book at you.” He glared at DeLong again. “Actually, I should throw the book at both of you.”

He sighed and leaned back in his chair, uncrossing his arms and linking his hands behind his head. He continued to glare between the two men.

“All right,” he said after minutes passed. “DeLong, I’ve known you long enough to know that ninety times out of a hundred, your instincts are sound. You want to search for the man, then fine.” He held both palms in the air, then slowly lowered them flat on the desk and leaned forward.

“But do not, I repeat do not, do anything that would require a warrant until you have probable cause to actually get a warrant. Keep me posted. I’ll give you two days to either find Grimes or hard evidence that he is actually missing. Two days. That is all.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you, Captain,” DeLong said with a satisfied nod.

“Yes, thank you,” Calhoun echoed.

“I have to run out for a little while,” the captain said with a sigh. He rose, straightening his shirt uniform. “Try not to waste too much of my time. Or yours.”

“Yes, sir,” DeLong acknowledged as he left the office.

“Where do you want to start?” Calhoun wondered, trailing after him.

“I suppose we should go back to the schoolyard,” DeLong said, halfway out the door. “Maybe between the two of us, we’ll find something I overlooked when I first looked around.” Outside, DeLong blew into his hands to warm them. “Honestly, I just wanted to get out of the station a little bit. But I didn’t want to go home. Sam has me sleeping on the couch these days. Anyway, I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. The body wasn’t there. The snow we had would have destroyed most, if not all the evidence.”

At the truck they slid inside. DeLong adjusted the heat as Calhoun set the gear in motion. “I just want to be sure we’ve covered all our bases.

Then let’s go back to the Walkers’. I want to know more about Jonathan Walker’s friendship with Manny Grimes.”

Love Is Death
The Afterdeath Book 1
by L.P. Masters
Genre: YA Paranormal
Gina’s plan for her afterlife is simple: survive as long as possible. The
afterlife is a ghost-kill-ghost kind of place. When she meets
newly-dead Alec, she can’t help her desire to protect him. Before
she knows it, she finds herself falling for him, despite the little
voice in her head telling her it’s a bad idea. Alec’s goals don’t
mesh well with Gina’s plans. Determined to save his living sister
from a murderer, he’s willing to disobey the laws of a
well-established cult in the afterlife. If the cult finds out,
they’ll kill him. Again. He’s hesitant to accept Gina’s help
and threaten her afterlife, but he’s guaranteed to fail without
her. Together they embark on a perilous mission, but the most
dangerous aspect of all is the threat of falling in love. Because in
the afterlife… love is death.

“Hey,” I said softly. “What’s going on?”

He bit his lower lip and shook his head. “Nothing.”

He was lying. Something was bothering him, and that was dangerous.

I heard a rare sound: birdsong, but it was clear, not muffled, which meant it was a ghost. I searched for it. There!

“Look, quick.” I pointed at the ghost of a black-capped chickadee a few feet away.

Alec smiled. The little bird twittered in its usual way and hopped across the grass, head turning in jerks like birds always do. It took wing, and I knew what that meant.

“Watch,” I whispered.

In the middle of a flap the bird disappeared. Its water dropped and splashed on the grass, and for a moment the afterghost continued to fly, swooping and twisting in the air before it disappeared as well.

“What the…?” Alec looked shocked.

“Birds don’t stay in the afterlife. Not for long.”

“Why not?”

“Soul sickness. They get here, realize there is nothing like them around, and they get sick.” I held my breath. “The same can happen to you if you’re upset about something.”

Alec looked me in the eyes. His stare was intense, as if he wanted to tell me something. Then he tore his gaze away. “I’ll be fine, Gina.”

I wanted to swear. He wouldn’t be fine. I could see it. I could feel it. He was going to die again if he couldn’t get himself out of that mood.

Excerpt

I was in the woods. It was nighttime, and I was alone. Again.

I looked up at the moon, noticing that it was full and low, and a blue mist tinged its circumference. It seemed so close to the earth that I could almost reach out and touch it. This felt familiar. Too familiar. I looked down to see my pendant had turned a radiant blue and I was wearing…a nightdress, of all things. God, I was half-naked. Had I been wearing that before?

A rustle in the nearby trees made me whirl around. And there he was. The beautiful, glowing boy was standing in the clearing with those indigo eyes focused on me.

My breath caught. “Colton!” I exclaimed as a rush of heat filled me. Once I realised I’d called his name like a long-lost lover, I cringed. I’d met the guy once, for God’s sake.

And here I was in the woods, again, acting like a lunatic. And wearing…I gasped and covered my chest with my arms.

Alexandra Wright has been writing since she could put pen to paper. Growing up in Sydney, Australia, she took pleasure in playing the piano, singing, the arts, languages, cooking and, of course, she spent a great deal of time reading and writing. Having so many interests meant her career aspirations had a habit of changing, but her profession eventually chose her. An incurable obsession with literature, her earliest and most enduring passion, led her to pursue a career as a novelist. While she dabbled in writing short stories and novellas as a child and teen, she began writing full-length novels as an adult. Being a child at heart, and an educator of young children, it was a natural progression for her to move in to writing fiction for children and young adults.

Read an excerpt:

Brooklyn, 1972. Realtor Len Trager shows an old brownstone to actor Nick O’Connor and statistician Maggie Ryan.

Len felt a prickle of hope. He couldn’t remember anyone else being this pleased by Lund’s weary old brownstone, not after meeting the immovable basement tenant. Could there possibly be a sale here after all?

Not to an actor, he reminded himself.

The upper floors were shoddily divided into separate apartments. But the second-floor bath still held a Victorian marble sink and chipped clawfoot tub, and the room at the front overlooked the street. Maggie smiled at Nick and said, “This could be a little study.”

“One more floor,” said Len. The top floor, once servants’ quarters, had been most recently occupied–– only Lund’s disruption of the plumbing had finally forced the young tenants to accept his relocation money and leave. Nick slapped his hand against a wall. “This isn’t a supporting wall, is it?”

“No,” said Len, giving the room a professional glance. “You’re thinking of remodeling?” That was always a good sign.

“Not many gyms around here. It would be great to have space to work out.” Nick stepped to the doorway. “What do you think, Maggie?”

She was down the hall, looking into the little front room, the one that sported the oriel window. For a moment she remained there, still.

“Do you like the place?” Len prompted.

She turned back to them slowly, and Nick, suddenly concerned, took a step toward her. But it was Len she answered.

“Yes,” she said, “it’s a great place. There’s only one problem. There’s a corpse in it.”

EXCERPT:

Maeve held Braden’s fur tight. She didn’t want to let him go. The moment he’d pushed her onto the floor in his massive wolf state, desire exploded. Somehow, all that black fur and the sight of his fangs got to her.

She knew then he’d spoken the truth. Though she was a witch, she could bond with this Border Patrol officer and serve as his alpha female.

Slowly, he shifted back to his human form, a seamless process reflecting his decade in Five Bridges. She released his fur as it disappeared through her fingers.

His green eyes held hers tight. She couldn’t have looked away if she’d wanted to. He said, “I need you to understand what you’re getting into here. This will be without one shred of emotion. What happens here is strictly physical, very physical. I have no interest in you otherwise, despite your alpha-mate capacity.”

She smiled. “Got it. No strings and yes, I’m game.”

He leaped to his feet, reached down and plucked her off the floor like she was feather. He lifted her into his arms then carried her into the bedroom, slamming the door shut with his foot.

She’d been wanting this for weeks. Months, maybe.

He took her to the bed but before he let go of her, he pulled the covers back. Then he dropped her so she bounced on the mattress.

She would have been happy to get her clothes off, but he went to work like a madman. He tugged off her shoes and jeans, then flipped her onto her stomach.”
