The house shook with such force the sheetrock split, raining chunks and powder onto Hannah’s bedroom floor. Raum stood, putting himself between Hannah and the door. He reached for the gun he kept at the back of his waistband and frowned when his hand found none.
Gripping Hannah’s hand, he tugged her with him to her nightstand to retrieve her gun from the drawer. “Stay behind me.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Understood?”
“Babe, you know that I’m stronger now.” She tugged on his shirtsleeve. “It’s not necessary to put on your macho pants and try to keep me out of danger.”
He trained the gun on the door and turned to face her. “Yes, I realize that you are stronger now. Heck, you’re more powerful than I am, but that does not, I repeat, does not mean that I won’t do everything in my power to protect you from Hell.”
The floor beneath them vibrated rhythmically, it reminded Hannah of vibrations from a giant’s footfalls. The vibration stopped right outside her bedroom door. Both of them watched the door, bracing themselves for what was to come.

Book One of The Broken Well Trilogy by Sam Bowring is now Free

2016-04-25_1101

In Prophecy’s Ruin, a child is prophesied to be born who will end the age-old war between the forces of shadow and light.

       YAWN!

We’ve all heard this synopsis a hundred times before. In fact, as the author of the book, Sam Bowring, says, ‘I HATE prophecy as a plot device. This idea that things are inevitable lies in stark opposition to the notion of free will, something I think we all prefer to believe in. And when hearing a prophecy leads you to you create the circumstances you are actively trying to avoid? I mean, come on. How many more times do we need to see that crap play out?’

So why is this book called Prophecy’s Ruin then, you weirdo?

‘The clue is right there in the title,’ says Sam. ‘What happens when a prophecy gets totally ruined? The whole basis for the story involves taking cliches of fantasy and twisting them in surprising new ways. I imagine most readers will immediately assume, for example, that light is good and shadow is evil, which is something they have brought to the table themselves as a learnt expectation – but spoilers, who knows? And how about the hero and his squeeze don’t get arbitrarily torn apart purely for the purposes of imposing extra drama, and instead get to face their adversaries together as a loving couple? What about goblins who are smart and practical, or a dragon who suffers from mental health issues? What about those, I ask?!’

Don’t let the stupid tone of this press release fool you (it is merely designed to grab your probably-wafer-thin attention) – this is a Proper Book which, when released by Hachette Australia some while back, was heaped with critical acclaim and commercial success.

‘the stuff of fantasy writers’ fantasies. An epic, enthralling, towering triumph.’

– AurealisXpress

‘may just be the start of the next big thing in Australian Fantasy.’

– Weekend Australian

If you are sick of cliche heroes and villains then this is the one to read.’
– Australian Bookseller + Publisher

Despite many such rave reviews, a vast percentage of the Earth’s population has never even heard of the Broken Well trilogy! CAN YOU IMAGINE?

‘The books came out on an annoying cusp of book evolution,’ says Sam. ‘It was right before ebooks were automatically released at the same time as their physical counterparts. Prophecy’s Ruin received no fanfare when it came online, and thus it remains a largely undiscovered timeless masterpiece. For reading purposes, of course, it may as well have come out yesterday – as a fantasy, it’s not like the story has dated. Goblins are forever! And no, modesty is not one of my weaknesses, haha.’

Sam is delighted that Hachette has just made the first book completely free at all major ebook retailers until 20th May 2016.

‘My greatest fear,’ says Sam, ‘is that my books won’t get read even after I’m dead. Thus I demand or ask very politely (whatever works best) that the reading public give this humble, above average writer a chance. I mean, what have they got to lose, except respect for me?’

some of the finest writing of action I’ve ever read …

one of the coolest fantasy series to come along in an age.’

Spotlight & Giveaway: Accepted, Secured, Significant by Kemley Whiteside

2016-04-24_13-04-03This text is a spiritual and inspirational journey for those drawn away from their purpose by the circumstances of their lives. This book is dedicated to those told they would never amount to anything.

It is for those told they would be just like their mother or father, that they are idiots, mistakes, and failures. It is for the pushed aside and ignored. It is for those under shadow, and for those abused from childhood. It is for the molested, and the ones told that no one loves them and no one ever would. It is for the misled and mistreated. It is for the suicidal. It is for the victims of domestic violence and abusive relationships. It is for those in spiritual bondage, and those who don’t believe in themselves. It is for those suffering from cancer or other diseases. It is for the motherless, fatherless, jobless, and homeless. It is for the depressive and anxious, the lonely and isolated. This book is for the hopeless.

To my brothers and sisters who need a way out: This book was written just for you. It is to polish your existence and your purpose on this earth.

This book was inspired and written by the Holy Spirit to assure you that, as a child of God, you no longer have to feel bound by labels and curses spoken over the course of your life. God wants to reinforce in your heart how valuable you are and how much you mean to Him. He wants you to know that through Him, you are Accepted, Secured, and Significant.

Anwen watched, transfixed. She felt like she was watching a movie, except she had a front row view of everything. When the jackal-like creature attacked Courtney, she found herself closer to the edge of the drop behind her.
Why were they after her? And why were her new friends defending her? She shook her head, trying to make sense out of everything, but it was all happening too fast.
Two more creatures broke off from the fray, moving towards the two women on the precipice, one from each side. Courtney feinted towards one, then the other, not sure which to expound her energy on. They were both closing in at the same pace. “Back!” She waved the spear in front of her, trying to ward them both off.
One Fallen jumped forward, growling menacingly to distract her as the other raced for the other side. Courtney pierced the one through the heart and heaved it away as the other sped past her, towards Anwen.
Courtney turned to offer warning, hoping to check its flight with her weapon. Instead, she heard a scream, then a loud splash as something fell into the water below. She turned in time to see another bout of steam billow, noticing that Anwen was missing. Courtney called out to her, running to the cliff’s edge.

This war is not being played on a battlefield.

Neither life nor her fae powers will let her go in peace.

In this final installment, Zoey’s strength, determination, and trust are put to the ultimate test. In the fight to protect the people she loves and stop DMG from experimenting on fae, humans, and animals to create soldiers, she learns the reality of how far Dr. Rapava will go to achieve his ultimate mission.

Of course, Rapava is not the only one willing to go to extremes. Vadik is hunting Ryker, and there is nothing he won’t do to get back the property he feels is his: both Ryker and the Stone of Destiny.

To end one evil, Zoey might have to make a deal with another. One she won’t be able to get out of. And it could be the worst decision she ever made.

Zoey Daniels has been tossed from foster home to foster home, where she grows up fast and tough. When she is placed in her “last-chance” home, she finds a reason to stay and turn her life around: her foster sister, Lexie, who is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Zoey will do anything to keep her safe.

After high school, Zoey is hired by a special government agency, the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG), where she meets the other reason to remain: Daniel, her co-worker. The man she loves.

But there is something unique about Zoey. She can see fae. Because of this, the DMG hires her to work as a Collector: catching, researching, testing, and using the fae to save human lives. The work never registers on her sympathy radar. She was raised to think of fae as beasts that feed on humans and want to destroy them.

When devastation hits Seattle, Zoey’s whole world is turned upside down. The electric storm connects her to a ruthless fae, a Wanderer named Ryker, whose dealings expose them to even more trouble and danger. They embark on a journey, running and hiding from both the government and fae, both of which threaten their lives and those they love.

But Garrett is everything she’s ever looked for; charming, successful, fun, and sexy. Despite her better judgment, his persistence pays off and she finds herself falling for him.

Book Excerpt

As I walk down the aisle, avoiding eye contact with my husband-to-be, I remember the dream and feel the need to run.
I clutch the bountiful bouquet of flowers, red and white for our Christmastime wedding, and feel the sweat on my palms collect in the center. I want to rub them down the front of my dress.
But that would be unacceptable. My grandma has lovingly sewn every stitch, carefully placed every pearly bead, and worked every delicate piece of lace. It’s a work of labor and love.
Today, I am supposed to be a princess.
But as I look around at familiar faces, friends and family, watching me take this enormous step into life as a wife, as a life partner, I feel anything but princess-like.
I feel the lie. I feel the relentless pursuit of truth. Both follow me down the aisle, tapping on my shoulder and reminding me that I have no ability to live up to this responsibility.
I am quaking in my white heels. My knees are shaking. But still I march forward on the arm of the only male in my life I’ve ever thought of as a father. He isn’t really, but he’s the only man my mom brought home over the years to whom I formed any real emotional attachment before they’d split ways. Due to his philandering ways, he was out of our life more than he was in it. But when he was around, something inside of me recognized something inside of him, and I cared for him.
I swallow down my fear. It’s only nerves. It’s normal. This is the natural order of things: you grow up, you get married, you have a family. That’s how it’s done.
Then what?
I finally make eye contact with Garrett and search for…safety? Love? Answers?
Only my own fear reflects back. He can see the hesitation, the anxiety, the angst. He smiles cautiously. He’ll never admit what we both know.
Just before we reach the altar, I take one last look around. The gathering within the small church is there for only one purpose: to watch us get hitched.
I could run right now. This is my last chance. I could just turn around and make a run for it.

Book Excerpt

Run. Run faster. As much as I strained my legs to move, they were immobile, like I was waist deep in quicksand.
Why can’t I move?
I tried to scream for help but my mouth was full, like it was stuffed with cotton—no sound would escape.
I felt something clutching my shoulder. No, it was someone. He was pushing me forward and then yanking me back. I tried to jerk away but he had a tight grip, like a vice.
I have to break free.
The tugging got harder, more forceful. He was calling my name— over and over. He knew my name.
“Laura, Laura.”
I jolted awake—my husband’s hand still on my shoulder.
“Honey, wake up. You’re having another bad dream.”
Slowly, I turned over in bed and looked at him—his dark brown eyes were fixated on me. I could see them clearly as the light from the bathroom brightened our bedroom.
For a month now, we had slept with this light on.
I could see the small wrinkle on his forehead. I loved that wrinkle though wished he didn’t have good reason to be so concerned. I was enduring the nightmares, but he had to deal with my tossing and mumbling in terror.
I remember when we first met—ten years ago in chemistry lab at Georgia Tech. He had walked up to me with those warm eyes and a charming, confident smile and asked, “Want to be partners?”
Two years later he took me to Stone Mountain Park, rented a small rowboat and, in the moonlight, he pulled out a diamond ring and asked me again, “Want to be partners?”
Life had seemed just about perfect.
Until now.
We looked at each other for a moment. Then he propped himself up on his elbow and said softly, “Laura, I feel so helpless. I know it’s only been a month, but…”
He hesitated.
“What?” I asked.
“It’s just as bad as that first night. After it happened. Look, I want to make you feel safe again, but I don’t know how.”
He rubbed his eyes and looked away. I waited, staring at him.
What isn’t he saying?
“I know you don’t want to see a therapist, but seeing someone doesn’t mean you’re crazy. Therapists don’t treat just crazy people. They help people who have been through traumas and you have. Hell, no one even has to know.”
He paused for a second.
“Don’t be mad at me, but yesterday I made an appointment for you. I was going to talk to you about it in the morning if you had another bad dream. I found a woman who is downtown by my office. She’s been practicing for about twenty years, got her doctorate from Emory and comes with really good patient reviews.”
He looked for my reaction and continued. “I made the appointment for you at 4:00 so we can go to dinner afterward. You know what you always say. You’ll try anything once, right?”
“I told you I don’t want to see a psychiatrist,” I pushed back. “I just need more time. I’ll bounce back. You know I almost came in the house on my own today. Besides, if I see a psychiatrist, on every job application I complete in the future, I’ll have to check the ‘Yes’ box when they ask if I’ve had mental health treatment.”
“Jesus. No you don’t. You’re too innocent sometimes.”
He gently tapped me on the nose.
“You can check the box ‘No.’ Besides, if that’s the only thing stopping you, I think you should give it a try. Her name is Barbara Cole. I’ll take you to Houston’s afterward,” he added.
I ignored the bribe. “But what can she do that you can’t? All she’ll do is listen and you do that for me already. Psychiatrists are for people who don’t have friends or husbands to talk to.”
Chris shook his head.
“Please? Do it for me.”
The tone in his voice was different—more helpless than normal. Chris had been so understanding, so comforting this past month, especially considering I had been waking him every night. How could I refuse his request?
I sighed. “Okay,” I relented. “I’ll go.”
“One visit. That’s all I’m asking. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to go back. She’s a psychologist, by the way, not a psychiatrist. She does therapy, not drugs.”
He glanced at the clock. It was 3:30 a.m.
Chris grabbed Konk, my stuffed animal gorilla that I won at the state fair by outshooting him at the basketball game. He had sworn the scum running the game couldn’t take his eyes off my butt and let me win.
“Here’s Konk,” he said. “I’m going to finish my presentation since I’m up. I’ll just be in the office. Want the door open?”
“Yes,” I said as I wrapped my arms tightly around Konk.
“Hey, we’ll celebrate your first therapy visit and my signed contract, I hope, this evening.”
“You mean you hope my first visit?” I said with a playful smile.
He gave me a look—he was in no mood for jokes.
“Fine. Fine. I’ll go,” I assured.
“If you’re asleep when I leave, just come by my office after the appointment and we’ll head to dinner. Try to get some sleep. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
